Fishing Line Capacity Calculator
Estimate how much fishing line your reel can hold when changing line diameter, line type, or spool fill level. Enter the capacity printed on your reel and compare it with the line you want to use.
Enter your reel and line information above.
How this fishing line calculator works
Reel manufacturers usually publish capacity using a specific line diameter. When you change to a thinner or thicker line, the amount of line that fits on the spool changes.
This calculator estimates the change using the relationship between line diameter and spool volume. Thinner line generally allows more yards on the same spool, while thicker line allows fewer yards.
For braided line, fluorocarbon, and other specialty lines, actual capacity can vary because diameter, construction, packing tension, and manufacturer specifications are not perfectly standardized.
How to use the Fishing Line Capacity Calculator
Check your reel
Find the line capacity printed on the reel, spool, packaging, or manufacturer’s specifications.
Enter the reference diameter
Enter the diameter of the line used for that published capacity. Manufacturer diameter information is preferred.
Enter your new line
Add the diameter of the line you actually want to use and enter the amount of line you would like on the reel.
Check the result
The calculator estimates the available capacity and shows whether your requested line length should fit.
Fishing Line Capacity Tips
Line diameter is more useful for capacity calculations than pound-test alone because the diameter of the same pound-test rating can vary between products.
A 10 lb line from one manufacturer may not have exactly the same diameter as a 10 lb line from another brand.
Braided line construction and packing can affect how much line actually fits on a spool, so treat the result as an estimate rather than a guaranteed measurement.
Filling a spinning reel too aggressively can contribute to line-management problems. Follow your reel manufacturer’s recommendations when available.
